The traditional brominated flame retardants used in PC industry are tetrabromobisphenol A polycarbonate oligomer (BPC) (the polymer with phenoxy terminal group contains about 52% bromine, and the polymer with tribromophenoxy terminal group contains about 58%), brominated phosphate [such as tri - (DI Bromophenyl) phosphate], (tdbppe), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), polydibromophenyl ether (pdbpo), bis (tribromophenoxy) ethane (btbpoe), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), polydibromophenyl ether (pdbpo) Decabromodiphenyl ether (DBDPO), polydibromostyrene (PDBs), tetrabromodiphenyloxybenzene (dbdpob), bis (tetrabromophthalimide) ethane (btbpie), etc. Antimony oxide is not very suitable to be used as synergist of halogenated flame retardants in PC, because they are depolymerization catalysts of PC and need special treatment when used. However, sodium antimonate can be used safely, and phosphorus is an effective flame retardant for oxygen-containing polymers. Therefore, brominated phosphate tdbpe is also particularly suitable for flame retardant PC. when the dosage is about 7.5%, the material can obtain UL94V-0 grade. If 0.3% pipe is added to PC, 3% tdbppe can meet the requirement of grade V-0, but it will lead to the decrease of material transparency. The melting point of tdbppe is about 110 ℃. Tdbppe can be melt blended with PC during material molding, so in fact tdbppe can also be used as processing aid to overcome the difficulties of PC processing, especially when PC is filled with reinforced materials. Tetrabromobisphenol A and specially treated SBO can greatly improve the flame retardancy of modified PC. When the mass fraction of tetrabromobisphenol A is 5%, the oxygen index of the modified PC is up to 32. However, the impact property and elongation at break of flame retardant PC decrease with the increase of tetrabromobisphenol A content. When the mass fraction of TBBPA is less than 15%, the flexural strength and tensile strength of flame retardant PC increase with the increase of TBBPA content; However, when the mass fraction of TBBPA exceeds 15%, the bending strength and tensile strength decrease rapidly with the increase of TBBPA content. With the increase of the ratio of tetrabromobisphenol A to sb: O, the flame retardancy of PC first increases and then decreases. When the ratio of tetrabromobisphenol A to sb: O is 3.5:1.0, the flame retardancy of PC is the highest, and the oxygen index is 32. When the mass fraction of tetrabromobisphenol A is 5%, the ratio of tetrabromobisphenol A and Sb is 3.5:1.0, the comprehensive performance of PC is the best, the oxygen index is 32, and the notched impact strength, bending strength, tensile strength and elongation at break of simply supported beam are 21.4kj/m, 80.4mpa, 59.4mpa and 71.6% respectively. Aromatic sulfonate flame retardant polycarbonate a series of inorganic and organic aromatic sulfonates (esters) are found to be very effective flame retardants for PC, and the amount required is very low (see table 5-30). For example, when PC contains about 0.1% sodium 2,4.5-trioxybenzoate, the leading index of PC can reach 29 ~ 35, and the flame retardant grade can reach UL94V-0. This kind of flame retardants has been used in industry. The high flame retardancy of aromatic antacid (ester) comes from its ability to catalyze and accelerate the thermal degradation of PC, and form a carbon layer on the burning surface of the material, which blocks the entry and transfer of heat. The mixture of the following three kinds of compounds can be used as flame retardant PC (the total amount of which does not exceed 1% of the final product mass); Alkali metal salts of aromatic sulfonic amines; Organic bromide oligomer; Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Table 5-31 lists the properties of PC and general PC with the above flame retardants. It can be seen from table 5-31 that the physical and mechanical properties of PC with a small amount of mixed flame retardant are comparable to those of PC without flame retardant, but the oxygen index and flame retardancy are significantly improved.
